Something where there should be nothing, and nothing where there should be something.
— The Weird and the Eerie, Mark Fisher
This is a research on contemporary horror cinema, investigated through the lens of a lecture performance.
Horror is an unsettling creature—while self-replicating, it undergoes a violent awakening to its own saturated nature. The study explores horror as a dismembered body, engaging with the concept of genre as a fragmented entity.
Horror is also a discursive technology, an affective, political, and sensory apparatus that reacts to the present, destabilizes certainties, and—with subversive force—transforms reality. The dismembered body becomes a landscape: no longer an “organic whole” but a mass of debris. A destabilized territory—alluring, predictable, offensive—creating a space where desires and ambivalences can be incorporated. Fears and pressures emerge and take shape.
Like litmus paper, it always reacts to the present—its fears, morals, and politics—and through regeneration and betrayal of form, expresses its vital force: the capacity to articulate untamed negativity.
