Everything Burns

A special projet on "The Trojan Women" for the first time in Stockholm

The trilogy

During the difficult period of the pandemic, Motus began working on one of the founding texts of Western culture, The Trojan Women by Euripides. In this work, they rediscover the theme of the ‘end’, a concept that intertwines myth and the present in a sadly dual way.

In 2021, the first show, Tutto Brucia. Just as a pandemic and a climate disaster mark the end of an era, so Le Troiane begins with an end: Ilium has already been destroyed and the women await their fate as spoils of war, looking out over the Mediterranean Sea, still the scene of so many tragedies today… At the heart of the work is the pain of loss, which raises profoundly political questions: which bodies deserve our mourning and which do not? What forms does mourning take?

Two spin-offs emerge from this first project: You were nothing but wind, a solo dedicated to the figure of Hecuba (with Silvia Calderoni) and her transformation into a ‘bitch with eyes of fire’ who barks and demands revenge after the loss of her family and her land. Animal metamorphosis is also the protagonist of the second focus, Of the nightingale I envy the fate, a choreographic lunge on Cassandra (with Stefania Tansini), prophetess of misfortunes, who conducts a shamanic rite where her fiery spirit of vengeance merges with an invitation not to be silent, to say NO to all wars, the song of the ‘bird from beyond the grave’ joined by the words of another resilient poetess like Audrie Lord.

The Everything Burns trilogy poetically merges the themes of the Trojan Women with the most searing tragedies of the contemporary world: the impossibility of bidding farewell to loved ones who died during the pandemic, the deaths of migrants attempting to reach Europe by sea or land, the executions of victims of the prostitution-trafficking system, the genocides still taking place in many parts of the world. A powerful glossary of the cracks of the present.
